Things to Do on Cape Cod

The Josiah Sampson House is located in the lovely and quiet seaside Cape Cod village of Cotuit. When this Federal-style New England house was built (circa 1793) by prosperous businessman Josiah Sampson, it was so elegant for its day that it came to be known by the townspeople as Sampson's Folly. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this home today serves as a comfortable retreat for travelers from all around the world. The Josiah Sampson House offers six spacious and comfortable guest rooms, each with private modern bath and most with a fireplace. Each room is decorated with your comfort in mind, with an eclectic mix of antiques and period reproductions.

Richard Thomas and Joe Gergyes became the newest owners of the bed and breakfast in 2007. Enjoy a gourmet breakfast in either the dining room or the garden (weather permitting) served every day between 8:00am and 9:30am. Relax in the romantic gazebo, luxuriate in the hot tub, or simply spend time with a good book in the living room. The beach in Cotuit on Nantucket Sound is approximately one mile away. We offer several bicycles for guest use in town. In the living room play a player piano with plenty of vintage piano rolls, watch television (satellite), play an assortment of games, and gather information about local dining, events, and attractions. The house is Wi-Fi equipped for easy use of your powerbooks or laptops, and a guest computer is available for researching activities, dining and destinations. However you choose to relax, the Josiah Sampson House offers the opportunity for quiet contemplation and for meeting new friends.

In its planned seclusion, the Village of Cotuit (one of several villages in the town of Barnstable) offers a quaint historic site for classic Cape Cod ambiance. The famed Cahoon Museum, golfing, boating and antique shopping are all conveniently accessible to our guests. Beautiful South Cape Beach, the Mashpee Woodlands and Loop Beach are all a short distance away. Enjoy exciting minor league baseball featuring the Cotuit Kettleers, or play a few sets of tennis, on either hard or clay courts, at the Kings Grant Racquet Club, adjacent to the Josiah Sampson House (a reduced rate for play is offered to guests of the B&B).

Cape Cod is a bountiful host, pleasing a wide range of tastes. Day trips can include the artistic and fishing heritage of Provincetown, the scientific community of Woods Hole, a ferry ride to the nearby islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, or the historic Plimoth Plantation. The Cape is known for an abundant variety of antique shops and eclectic artists' studios. Throughout the Cape, the hiker, the bicyclist and the beachcomber will enjoy an expansive variety of nature trails and beaches located along or near the Bay, Nantucket Sound and the National Seashore. Finally, nearby restaurants and world-renowned summer theatre offer evening entertainment and gastronomic delights.

We hope you will visit us at the Josiah Sampson House.

     Your hosts,
Richard Thomas & Joseph Gergyes, MD
